TYPHOON HALONG IMPACTING ALASKA
TYPHOON HALONG IMPACTING ALASKA
As the climate continues to impact Alaska, bigger and stronger storms will continue to hit the Seward Peninsula. Early October 2025, weather predictions stated Typhoon Halong will bring hurricane force winds and flooding to Nome, the coast and we should anticipate this impact, to be worse than Merbok.
Nome was barely touched by Halong, although - our neighbors were hit hard. Hundreds of homes have been lost, thousands have been evacuated, damages are unprecedented. As an Alaskan community, we support and share the devastation because we know firsthand how challenging it can be to rebuild. Our initial village was flooded and Solomon had to move the entire village inland up on a hill, in the early 1900’s.
When any Alaskan community is hurting, we all hurt. Village of Solomon would like to share ways to support those that are impacted the hardest. Here are some links for reputable organizations fundraising, supporting and coordinating ways to provide relief to disaster victims.
‘Community groups and businesses across the state are coordinating relief efforts after the remnants of Typhoon Halong brought widespread devastation to Western Alaska.
The storm has killed one person, left two missing, displaced hundreds and destroyed or damaged dozens of homes, especially in the hardest-hit communities of Kipnuk and Kwigillingok.’ knom.org article

In response to the recent storms and flooding that have devastated communities along Alaska’s western coast, Alaska air cargo carriers have come together to provide critical transportation support for relief efforts.

impacts of typhoon merbok
On September 17th, 2022, a major storm hit the Seward Peninsula creating devastating impacts to those along the peninsula, primarily the coast. The Nome-Council Highway was washed out in various areas destroying hundreds of properties and cabins. The resiliency of the people did not allow for this storm to take away culture. Luckily Knik Construction was already local with equipment on another Nome area project and immediately refocused on rebuilding the washed out highway. Not only did this storm wash out the roads, the storm also displaced the Okitkon Shelter cabin from it’s home location, inland several miles. Due to it’s current location and the retrieval efforts, the tribe was unsuccessful securing equipment and help to transport the cabin back to it’s home.
One tribal member experienced flooding in Nome during the storm. Many, many losses had occurred during this catastrophic aftermath typhoon which originated out of the northwestern Pacific ocean due to unusually warm waters which created the powerful tropical wind and rain storm.
