Youth & Elder Camp

Frances Wright Annual Youth And Elder Camp

The Village of Solomon’s tribal council hosts a 5 day summer youth camp every summer at the Solomon B&B for tribal members ages 8-18 and elders 55 and older. Tribal members will have an opportunity to learn culturally traditional activities that will promote healthy lifestyles. These activities are drawn from Alaska Native traditional foods, healthy food choices, and healthy habits that contribute to physical fitness, including prevention of chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Tribal members are welcomed to attend but the preference will be given to our youth ages 8 to 18 and elders 55 and older as identified in the V.O.S. tribal enrollment database. Youth under the age of 8 are welcome to attend only with parental supervision. Parents/legal guardians are also welcome to attend any portion of the youth camp.

On a spiritual level, youth will learn how gathering and eating traditional foods are good sources of nutrients, which is an important part of our culture that is tied closely to the land and environment that contributes to our spiritual well-being.

Youth camp is primarily funded by Bering Straits Regional Housing Authority's crime prevention and drug elimination grant.
