ABOUT
The Village of Solomon has been a longtime advocate for Missing and murdered indigenous women and girls, their Tribal Resources Director had taken on an annual public event hosted in Nome, Alaska on May 5th annually in advocacy and awareness efforts. Oftentimes the Village of Solomon seeks additional support in coordinating the public event which also included requesting donations to order shirts/sweaters or stickers so that the advocacy and awareness is worn or highlighted more than just one day a year. May 5th is recognized as the National Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Day, primarily focusing on Women and Girls, VOS likes to include all indigenous peoples.
Over the last few years, the national awareness surrounding the lack of justice and lack of acknowledgement surrounding tribal nations and their missing, several federal efforts began opening the door in support of tribal nations with federal funds, such as the Dept of Justice, offi ce of victim services tribal allocation set aside funds.
During public events the VOS Tribal Resources Director had been approached by families to work with and on behalf of these families whop had faced injustice of form.
After working with and on behalf of local Nome families, the VOS staff discussed the ongoing efforts with the VOS Traditional Council, where President Timbers requested the establishment of a committee. During this time, the VOS Dept. of Justice Victim Crime tribal set aside budget was revised to include the development and management of a justice committee, then a solicitation was announced publicly.
